ACE 2010

Australian Centenary Event

In early January 2010, a group of 13 Guides and Leaders from Winston Hills and Toongabbie Districts travelled together to join 2500 other girls and women to take part in the International Girl Guide Jamboree held in Geelong, Victoria.  The week was packed full of activities of all sorts from rock-climbing to bungee trampoline, scuba diving to horse-riding, visiting TV stars to kayaking and much more.  Lots of new friends from around Australia and the world were made and all sorts of badges and 'swaps' were exchanged.  A special Guide's Own reflecting on the past, the present and the future of Guiding was held at Phillip Island's Penguin Parade just prior to the arrival of the adorable Little Penguins.  The camp filled 3/4s of the grand stands there!  A special trip to a water theme park was also organised for everyone on camp.  The slides were great fun and from the top you could see the seemingly endless rows of buses used to transport everyone there.  We even overcame the obstacle of the total fire bans in place by having a mock campfire ceremony with a video of a campfire instead of the real thing.  It mightn't be as good for toasting marshmallows, but you can have just as much fun singing and dancing around it with friends.  The last full day of camp consisted of the 'ACE Race' - a treasure hunt style event around Geelong.  You couldn't miss the Girl Guides that day - we turned the city pink!  The event finished with a closing ceremony to say goodbye and hear news of the next international jamboree in Australia - fanTAStic 2013 to be held in Tasmania.
